It Started With a Bite…

In 2021, doctors in Brazil treated a man with a severe infection on his back — it turned out to be myiasis, caused by fly larvae burrowing into his skin. The infection began from a simple mosquito bite that was scratched and left exposed. Myiasis affects tens of thousands annually, mostly in tropical regions with poor hygiene and sanitation, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Another real condition is necrotizing fasciitis, or ā€œflesh-eating disease,ā€ which spreads rapidly and destroys skin, muscle, and tissue. The CDC estimates around 1,200 cases per year in the U.S., with a high fatality rate if untreated. In 2018, a Florida man nearly died after bacteria entered a small cut while swimming.

These conditions often start with something minor — a bite, scratch, or dirty wound. If symptoms like extreme pain, swelling, or pus appear, seek medical help immediately. Early treatment saves lives, especially in high-risk environments.
